Abstract / samenvatting in Nederlands:

Abstract / summary in English:

Pollination of highbush blueberry is essential for both yield and fruit quality. A larger diversity of pollinators may be desirable to decrease the vulnerability of the cropping system to climate variations. For this reason, blueberry growers employ both honeybees and buff-tailed bumblebees for pollination, and recently added also solitary bees, particularly the red masonbee Osmia bicornis. This research has been carried out to investigate the role of masonbees (Osmia bicornis and Osmia cornuta) in relation to bumblebees and honeybees in the pollination of highbush blueberry. At 5 locations in Limburg, The Netherlands, different combinations of pollinators were tested. Results show that pollination is not optimal at all locations. Both fruit set, and the number of seeds per berry were assessed as a measure of pollination. A better pollination results in more seeds per berry, and a higher berry weight. Without the presence of pollinators, the average yield of Liberty is 1.7 tonnes/ha, compared with an average yield of 9.7 tonnes/ha under natural circumstances. We found that on these locations, 61-95% of the yield of Liberty is dependent on the presence of pollinators. The presence of honey bees is correlated with higher fruit set, whereas the presence of masonbees is correlated with a higher number of seeds per berry. As the observations of both correlations are restricted to 5 locations and one season, the experiments should be repeated on more locations to confirm these findings. The findings indicate that different pollinators may have their own pollination 'niche', supporting the importance of not being dependent on one type of pollinator. The diversity of wild pollinators in highbush blueberry fields is very low. To increase the abundance and diversity of wild pollinators, an integrated approach is necessary, addressing not only food sources and nesting opportunities, but also the use of crop protection agents.
