Abstract / samenvatting in Nederlands:

Abstract / summary in English:

Patients often combine regular care and Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM) without consulting with their general practitioner (GP). This is an undesirable situation, since CAM therapies may (positively or negatively) interact with regular treatments. Hence, it is important that patients can discuss their questions on and use of CAM with their GP. The Louis Bolk Institute has been commissioned to investigate the integration of CAM within primary health care in order to better meet patients' needs. The main objective of this project ('Integrative Medicine in Practice') is to contribute, from a patients' perspective, to sustainable primary health care based on an integrative care approach. Results show that this approach –which allows discussing CAM options and using CAM in combination with regular care– leads to significant improvements in the physical well-being of patients with chronic joint problems.
